Ingredients

Apple filling
  • 2 can (21 oz) apple pie filling
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp allspice
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
Oat crumble topping
  • 1.5 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.75 cup unsalted butter cold, cubed
Serving
  • 1 vanilla ice cream for serving

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Preheat and season the filling
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F, then grease a 9x13 baking dish.
  2. Stir cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and lemon juice into the canned apple pie filling, then spread it evenly in the prepared dish.
Make the oat crumble
  1. Combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt, then cut in cold butter until chunky clumps form.
  2. Scatter the crumble generously over the apple filling, covering it as evenly as possible.
Bake
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes at 375°F until the topping is golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges, with caramelized spots visible on the crumble.
Rest and serve
  1. Rest the crisp for 5 minutes so the bubbling thickens slightly, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For the best crumble, keep the butter cold right up to cutting; if your kitchen is warm, chill the crumble for 10 minutes before baking. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; reheat at 350°F until warmed through. Freeze for up to 2 months (freeze baked and cooled), then thaw in the fridge overnight and reheat. For a lighter option, use light butter and reduce the brown sugar to 1/2 cup while keeping the bake time the same.
