Ingredients

Patriotic puppy chow base
  • 9 cup Chex cereal Use rice or corn Chex cereal.
  • 12 oz white chocolate chips or white melting wafers Use white melting wafers for easier melting.
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter Butter helps the white chocolate melt smoothly.
  • 2 cup powdered sugar For the classic powdered-sugar coating.
  • 1 cup red M&Ms Add after the cereal is set.
  • 1 cup blue M&Ms Add after the cereal is set.
  • 0.5 red and blue star sprinkles Add for a festive patriotic look; adjust to preference.

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Coat the Chex cereal
  1. Measure Chex cereal into a very large bowl and set aside.
  2. Melt white chocolate chips and butter together in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring until completely smooth.
  3. Pour the melted white chocolate over the Chex and stir gently until every piece is evenly coated.
Powder sugar shake coating
  1. Transfer the coated cereal into a large zip-lock bag, add powdered sugar, seal, and shake vigorously until all pieces are well coated.
  2. Spread onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and let cool for 30 minutes until set.
Finish with candies and sprinkles
  1. Transfer to a large bowl and toss with red and blue M&Ms and star sprinkles, then serve in a big bowl or individual bags.

Notes

Pro tip: Shake the Chex in the zip-lock bag just until coated—if you over-shake after adding powdered sugar, the pieces can become clumpy. Store airtight at room temperature for up to 3 days; it’s best served within that window. Freezing is not recommended because the candies and powdered sugar can lose texture. For a dietary swap, use dairy-free white chocolate chips and butter alternatives to make it dairy-free while keeping the same method.
